At a time when videogame marketing is all sizzle and no steak, SEGA has brought back the best era of advertising: Commercials that enjoy a playful rivalry.
The Ad is an adrenaline fuelled 31 seconds of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds glazing, with a pretty overt nod to how Mario Kart World’s newest features aren’t exactly pulse pounding. They communicate this with the imagery of a camper van taking on a dragster, which is probably the most heavy handed comparison one could make.
Seriously, it’s a good bit of fun:
God, it even ends with a wide-eyed dude screaming “SEGA!”
Realistically we all know that the console wars are long over. Even if this was considered a console-war style jab at Nintendo, Sega isn’t even in a position to take such a shot – considering they don’t even make consoles any more. It’s a fun nod to the old days of brand battles, when things were a little more serious between the gaming titans and their thought to be endless war for market share.
A playful punch to the plumber’s arm is what this is, and I am very much on board with bringing back the best era of video game advertising.
Did you enjoy this blast from the past? Maybe CrossWorlds has BLAST PROCESSING as a feature. Let us know what you think in the comments or on our social media.
