Leaks, leaks, LEAKS. Fun for players, less so for the guys at Blizzard.
BlizzCon is mere days away (the event starts on November 2) and the internet is abuzz with all manner of speculation and discussion.
Really, the lead up to events like this are prime real estate for Trolls and Photoshop wizards to stir the pot in order to rile up the internet hype machine – everyone picks out their favourite grain of salt and roots for their favourite rumor to become true. What’s different in 2019?
Interestingly, the leaks that are surfacing have a little more…substance to them than years past – eSports reports, Book publisher listings, you name it, there is a much more ‘official’ air to most of them. I miss the days when everyone had an uncle working at Nintendo to scoop the big news.
So let’s break down the most prolific rumors regarding Blizzard’s big annual event, and maybe predict the future a tad?
New World of Warcraft : Expansion apparently leaked?
Dating a while back to a thread on 4chan, an apparent ‘developer’ started talking about a new WoW expansion where everyone dies and becomes a spooky ghost. I mean, it sounded dorky but the more I read about it, the more sense it made.
The expansion is apparently titled ‘Shadowlands’, and will continue the weird story about what happens after death in Azeroth – maybe revisiting our friend Bolvar, who is now the seconding Lich King.
Recently, some BlizzCon catalogue images and a marketing email template have surfaced showing both the title and the new Lich King, like so:

There is a ton of evidence backing up this tidbit, particular with the current Battle for Azeroth expansion constantly talking about the mysterious nature of death. There are also many key players in the Warcraft world cryptically suggesting that there is a lot more to dying than just feeding worms.
Maybe after 15 years, all the WoW players just need a dirt nap.
Diablo 4 revealed in an artbook listing?
So I read the news a little while back about some website apparently talking about an artbook listing – an artbook that toted some amazing artwork for Diablo 1, 2, 3 …and FOUR!?
The listing was in a foreign language, so initially I assumed it might have been a translation error (perhaps the book was doing to show artwork of the doomed Diablo phone game?) and moved on.
But now, apparently there is a screencap of a page actually showing Lilith, the Daughter of Hate – and some pretty clear mentions of a fourth Diablo game.

Lilith has definitely been mentioned in a number of Diablo titles, but we have never actually had the chance to actually face her. The above could be a fairly involved photoshop, but damn, I sure hope it isn’t.
ESPN esports document mentions Overwatch 2?
This is an interesting one – rather than bubbling up from random twitter posts and 4chan chicanery, this is from…ESPN esports.
The claim is that they have a document listing all the incredible details that reveal Overwatch 2’s existence, including information relating to a proper PvE system, a new hero and much much more.

It’s curious that the entire article is presented in an entirely factual way, there is no speculation here. Very little wiggle room for interpretation.
The internet is having a field day with the news, thought some are not easily swayed, going so far as to try and refute the marketing imagery that has been shown so far:
The text is missing the triangles over the V and under the A, and the logo is extremely uneven/bumpy (unprofessional vector? did they just use a freehand pen tool?) pic.twitter.com/iRhdGSmGcm

IT’S VISUALLY WRONG! This right here is my secret passion, when the graphic designers of the world start pointing out minute errors like it was an episode of CSI. ENHANCE.
Of course for every debunked image, there is at least one more that seems to lean into it being true. Anyone for a Genji coke?
The beauty of all these leaks hitting the internet right now is that we can enjoy the boiling point for a nice brief period – BlizzCon is literally this coming weekend, so whatever you are hoping for will be either confirmed or debunked within the week.
Me personally? I want a remaster of The Lost Vikings. My uncle who works at Nintendo said it’s happening.
BlizzCon 2019 will begin at 3:30 am on November 2 and ends at 4:00 pm on November 3
