Bloodborne Lore: Blood Ministration & The Healing Church

The Healing Church has to be one of the most influential organisations within the Bloodborne story, however not all that much is explained about it. All that you generally understand in a standard play through is that theyre supposed to be the good guys.

The Healing Church was originally created in the aftermath of the Choir. The Church was very hierarchical in the way that the operations were conducted. There were three main rankings or positions: the black-garbed hunters, white-garbed hunters referred to as doctors, and the Choir who are the leaders of The Healing Church.

Regardless of the fact that they did not originate from Byrgenwerth(a college which is the main source of knowledge, inspiring the Healing Church’s teachings) itself, the Church were the explorers who discovered the labyrinth proceeding that place. They also discovered the remnants of the Truth within its walls. The Truth is the discoveries that were made within the Labyrinth. Following this, they used the pre-conducted research conducted regarding the Truth within Byrgenwerths walls as a foundation for their own. However, it wasnt until they started conducting Blood Ministration and experiments with the blood that their form of metamorphosis arose.

Master Laurence, the person who founded the Healing Church, and one of his colleagues believed that in order for humanity to evolve and go beyond its preconceived limits, they had to research healing using the Old Blood (forbidden blood that has been theorised to belong to that of the Moon Presence). During the times of Byrgenwerth, Master Willem (the Head Scholar of Brygenwerth) taught all of his students to wear blindfolds, encouraging them to look into oneselfand emphasising that they needed to line their brain with eyesin order to see what the Great Ones see and acquire more eldritch knowledge, also known as insight, to further evolve into greater beings. By far one of Willems most important teachings was the proverb of Byrgenwerth (often referred to as the Byrgenwerth adage), which you hear Willem say to Laurence when you touch Laurences beast-form skull, following the death of Vicar Amelia: Fear the Old Blood. The reasoning being behind this is that there are dire consequences for using the Old Blood, and only Willem truly understood this, thus creating his fear and respect for the Old Blood.

Evidenced by the memory within Laurences skull, Laurence strayed from Willems teachings, driving a wedge between them until they no longer saw eye to eye. Disregarding Willems most important teaching, the Byrgenwerth adage, Laurence started down a path whereby he would use the Old Blood in his experiments in an effort to move forward. Through these experiments, Laurence discovered that the Old Blood could be used to cure various ailments in humans, and could cause one to gain inhuman capabilities in their strength and speed. It was because of this that he believed the Old Blood was necessary for the evolution of human race into greater beings. With this in mind he founded the Healing Church and spread the teachings of Blood Ministration, an art used to heal people afflicted by ailments. As time passed and blood healing become more of a normality among the people of Yharnam, some citizens of Yharnam began transforming into creatures. It was when this occurred that Laurence truly understood the Byrgenwerth adage, because when mixed with human blood the Old Blood eventually corrupts its host and turns them in to foul mindless beasts. Depending on the host, the Old Blood transforms one in to all manner of atrocities great and small. This is the root of the calamity which befell Yharnam.

It is quite apparent that Laurence deeply regrets his mistake of using Old Blood through his notes left throughout the Lecture Building in Byrgenwerth. These notes also insinuate what one must do in order to transcend the Hunt (the night in which Hunters scour the streets of Yharnam, exterminating any abomination they may see), which he unfortunately discovered in the wake of realising his errors in using the Old Blood. “Master Willem was right. Evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race”. “Hunt the Great ones. Hunt the Great ones”. “Three third Umbilical cords. From the Caryll Rune Beast: “Beast” is one of the early Caryll Runes as well as one of the first to be deemed forbidden. “The discovery of blood entailed the discovery of undesirable beasts”.
