Bungie Preps For Layoffs As Destiny 2 Development Is Shuttered

A final update will sign off Destiny 2 and the team will be downsized

Reports are circulating that Bungie is preparing for major layoffs after Destiny 2 delivers its final update, Monument of Triumph.

Initially shared by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, Bungie’s next move will be to focus on their live-service shooter Marathon as it is revealed that a sequel to Destiny 3 is NOT in development. Internal staff are pitching new ideas – including Destiny titles – however none are greenlit.

NEW: Bungie is planning a significant layoff following the end of Destiny 2's development. Destiny 3 is NOT in active production. Some Bungie staff are pitching and prototyping new ideas including Destiny games, but none are yet greenlit. Story: www.bloomberg.com/news/article…

With Destiny 2 ending active development, members of the team that are not shuffled to other departments are entirely at risk of losing their jobs – with Schreier describing the positions lost as a “significant number”.

Bungie acknowledged that the studio is moving into a new phase in a blog post published earlier this week:

As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio.

Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to.

We’re proud of Destiny 2, the places it took us, and the legacy it has created. Because of you all, our universe is vast, built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we have forged life-long memories and friendships with you all.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made that journey with us.

The job cuts hit at a brutal time for Bungie and Sony. Just weeks ago, Sony’s 2025 earnings report flagged a massive $766 million write-down on Bungie’s assets, signaling major doubts about the Destiny creator’s long-term trajectory. This meant many were not entirely surprised by the announcement, but the shock is still felt by all. Destiny felt almost immortal in the landscape of gaming, like it would persist forever – but with the news of Bungie’s hardship and no concrete plans for a further sequel, it looks incredibly grim.
