UPDATE: Activision has provided the following statement in regards to the rumours covered in the article below:
“We have an exciting slate of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year and beyond. Reports of anything otherwise are incorrect. We look forward to sharing more details when the time is right.”
ORIGINAL ARTICLE BELOW
For the first time since 2005, Call of Duty will not have an annual release in 2023.
That is if a recent report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier is to be believed (and why wouldn’t it?). Schreier writes that people familiar with the franchises’ plans have said that Treyarch’s next entry in the juggernaut shooter series has been moved to 2024, with some executives believing “they’re introducing new versions too rapidly.” Treyarch will now also assist on a new online free-to-play game that is in the works.
2021’s Vanguard failed to meet sales expectations, with Schreier stating that Activision suits believe that the company’s Warzone has been eating into sales and player base of the mainline entry. Vanguard’s mixed critical reception likely didn’t help either. Infinity Ward’s new Modern Warfare game will still launch in 2022.
There is a chance that Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision could change this, however I think most people would agree that a break, even just a year, would be good for the series.
What do you think of Call of Duty taking a break in 2023? Let us know in the comments or on social media.
