Dreams Early Access Officially Shuts Its Doors, ‘IMPY’ Award Voting Underway

Dreams’ Early Access is coming to an end. As of 8th December, 11.59pm GMT (9th December, 10:59am AEDT) the Early Access build of the game will no longer be available to purchase on the PlayStation Store, and only existing players will be able to continue making and playing Dreams creations.

Early Access for Dreams originally launched April 16th of this year, and has enjoyed a healthy and creative community both new and carried over from the Alpha and Beta launches. We recently spoke to MediaMolecule developers Daniel Kidney and Liam de Valmency about the success of the Early Access program and how the Dreams community has formed around the game. You can read about that right here.

Of course, players who are already in the Early Access version of the game will be able to continue playing after new purchases have been switched off, and will automatically be upgraded to the full version of the game, whenever that launches. In their post over on the PlayStation Blog, MediaMolecule have made mention of some of the work they’re now putting into the full Dreams release, including new, motion-free control schemes, more tutorial content, improved community features and the first MediaMolecule-developed story content.

In celebration of all the hard work that players have put in since getting access to Dreams, there will also be an inaugural ‘IMPY’ Awards held on January 26th of next year, which will be broadcast live on Twitch and will highlight some of the best creations and creators from this year. Nominations open on December 9th and will include the following categories:

  • Creator of the Year
  • Dream of the Year
  • Best Visuals
  • Best Narrative
  • Best Sculpture
  • Best Song
  • Best Animation

It’s an exciting time to be a part of, or an observer of, the Dreams community. Fingers crossed that we don’t have to wait too much longer for the final product!

Kieron started gaming on the SEGA Master System, with Sonic the Hedgehog, Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy. The 20-odd years of his life since have not seen his love for platformers falter even slightly. A separate love affair, this time with JRPGs, developed soon after being introduced to Final Fantasy VIII (ie, the best in the series). Further romantic subplots soon blossomed with quirky Japanese games, the occasional flashy AAA action adventure, and an unhealthy number of indie gems. To say that Kieron lies at the center of a tangled, labyrinthine web of sexy video game love would be an understatement.
