EA Has Cancelled An Open-World Star Wars Game

Another one bites the dust

Star Wars is one of the smallest biggest IPs around the world, even outside of gaming, so it goes without saying that any news surrounding a future Star Wars game would be big. Originally reported by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, it seems EA has cancelled an upcoming open-world Star Wars game which was announced with the (unjustified) shutdown Visceral Games in 2017.

EA Vancouver, who previously were a studio that mainly handled support for EA’s other titles, were the ones developing the unnamed Star Wars game and they had been working on it since 2017. This is not to be confused with Visceral’s Star Wars game which was being developed prior to Visceral’s closure and more or less cancelled with the major development reboot.

EA had not shown any of EA Vancouver’s open-world Star Wars game publicly, but the publisher talked about it when it announced Visceral’s demise. “It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design,” the company said at the time. “A development team from across EA Worldwide Studios will take over development of this game, led by a team from EA Vancouver that has already been working on the project.” – Kotaku

What this means for the future of Star Wars as an IP for gaming is unclear, however, EA’s handling of the IP has seen a myriad of controversy and it may come as a surprise to no one if Disney decides to step in and do something about it.
