In news that no one expected to read today, Epic Games has announced that it has acquired online music platform Bandcamp.
For those who frequently use Bandcamp, like myself, don’t fret, Bandcamp will continue to operate as a standalone marketplace, and current CEO and co-founder Ethan Diamond will continue to captain the ship.
Founded in 2008, unlike most music platforms, Bandcamp rewards the artists and labels that use its service with a tasty average margin of 82%, with total payments made close to US$1 billion.
It’ll be interesting to see what Epic has in-store for Bandcamp in the future. In the statement announcing the acquisition, the company said that “Bandcamp will play an important role in Epic’s vision to build out a creator marketplace ecosystem for content, technology, games, art, music and more.”
