The pandemic has had a crazy impact on the entire world, including the game industry. There has been a rise in the number of studios who have adopted more flexible working hours, four day working weeks, and the availability for people to work from home for some studios; all a result of these changin times. Unfortunately, for some other studios, the pandemic has hit really hard. Team Cherry is one such case, at least according to Geoff Keighley.
In an interview with GameSpot, Keighley briefly discussed what was happening with the highly anticipated Hollow Knight Silksong, the sequel to Team Cherry’s 2017 metroidvania game, Hollow Knight. In this section he claims that the Adelaide-based developer was “hit pretty hard by the pandemic”, going on to explain that he frequently checks in with smaller teams like Team Cherry to see how they are but not to see what kind of state their projects are in.
It’s a small team and stuff like that so they’ve been taking their time. – Geoff Keighley
This question comes as no surprise to anyone as there has been little to no information regarding Silksong since its initial reveal back in 2019. The closest we have gotten in the form of official information is a statement from co-director, William Pellen, explaining to PC Gamer “We’re still working steadily on it, and we’re all looking forward to sharing more about it once we get closer to release.”
While it is a bummer to hear that the pandemic hit Team Cherry the way it did, it’s also quite understandable given the small size of the time.
