It’s finally happened. During a stacked The Game Awards 2024, Naughty Dog has taken the opportunity to lift the lid on its next major project after 2020’s The Last of Us Part II.
Validating long-held rumours that the studio has been working on a sci-fi title, this premiere reveal didn’t quite give away its heritage until a good few moments in, setting up a mysterious scene involving a space-faring bounty hunter named Jordan A. Mun as she locks in a contract on a distant and dangerous planet. It’s definitely an endeavour in mood-setting overall, a vibe piece if you will.
Naughty Dog has certainly provided a bit of a blog post going into slightly more depth which you can read right here, but beyond that we’re left with this roughly four-minute announcement trailer that begs more questions than it provides answers. Like, what is Jordan’s situation that’s so dire she’d risk it all going after a contract nobody else will touch? Who is this guy and why is he played by Kumail Nanjiani? How will this thing actually play?
In the blog post, Naughty Dog talks Intergalactic up as having the deepest gameplay experience from the studio to date, and of course is aiming to give players an emotional story driven by an ensemble cast of compelling characters. In a very small glimpse of what could loosely be described as “gameplay” toward the end, we see Jordan rushing at a hulking, robotic enemy and wielding an energy blade of some kind, so it’s safe to say we’ve probably exited the gritty, third-person shooter territory occupied by ND’s post-Jak and Daxter output.
Check out the trailer below:
It’s early days, so we still don’t have any indication of a release date or even target platforms for this one just yet, but hopefully more will come in time.
