Developer Double Fine Productions has announced Keeper, a third-person adventure game coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC on October 17.
Revealed during the recent Xbox Games Showcase, Keeper is the newest title from Double Fine, the Tim Schafer-led team behind the cult classic series Psychonauts. A third-person adventure game filled with puzzles and exploration, Keeper fits neatly into Double Fine’s wheelhouse, more so once you realise that the player character is a lighthouse with legs.
Standing alone on a forgotten island amid a vast sea, the lighthouse suddenly wakes with a sense of purpose, throwing itself to the ground and forming legs made of vines and rubble. Together with a friendly seabird, the lighthouse sets off toward the centre of the island. The reveal trailer for Keeper is stunning, showing that Double Fine has managed to pack in an insane amount of character into a usually stationary building. The lighthouse’s expressions, made by way of the housing around the light, show fear and apprehension as the ground gives way. We also see a few puzzle-solving mechanics in play, like the light being used to affect the flora around the island and the bird being sent to otherwise inaccessible heights.
