Kemuri: Hunt The Unseen Is A Yokai-Hunting Action Game With More Style Than We Can Handle

Yokai can’t wait for this

Developer UNSEEN has given us the first look at gameplay for its upcoming action game, Kemuri: Hunt the Unseen, which is slated for release on PS5 and PC in 2027.

Sneaking out of the shadows and appearing during the recent PlayStation State of Play showcase, Kemuri challenges you and up to two other friends in three-player co-op to hunt down dangerous Yokai throughout a super stylised and colourful Kemuri City. Before taking it to yokai with various weapons and abilities, players need to reveal the trickster spirits by way of the Foxwindow, a special technique that brings the unseen creatures into view (while looking anime as hell in the process).

While you’ll be duking it out with these malevolent menaces, you’ll also be able to form pacts with them, granting you additional abilities by way of Possession Apparel. Long story short, you’ll become possessed, change appearance, and gain cool new skills, all while tricking yourself out in sick threads. Transformations aren’t new to video games, but this flavour of it sounds awesome.

If Kemuri sounds/looks familiar, it’s because the game was first revealed during The Game Awards 2023, with the head of UNSEE, Ikumi Nakamura, showing off a concept trailer to the audience. Nakamura is a known quantity in the gaming scene, having worked on titles such as Bayonetta with PlatinumGames, The Evil Within and its sequel, and GhostWire: Tokyo, before departing Tango Gameworks to form UNSEEN. Regardless of her game dev accomplishments, you’ll definitely know Nakamura from her adorable GhostWire: Tokyo reveal at E3 2019.

You can watch the gameplay reveal for Kemuri: Hunt the Unseen here:

In a pretty stacked State of Play, Kemuri stood out, at least for me. The bold designs, great use of colour, and striking character made me sit up and pay attention. Moreover, the action shown during this trailer looks wicked, so I’ll be keeping a close eye on this one as we head towards its 2027 release.
