A new, ten-minute gameplay clip for the upcoming horror title A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead has dropped, giving us our best look at the game to date.
Posted exclusively to IGN’s YouTube channel, the gameplay shows the asthmatic protagonist attempting to escape from what looks to be a hospital, all while trying to avoid making any noise that might attract the prowling Death Angels. Taking a big puff of their inhaler before doing anything physical (been there), we see doors being manually opened, obstacles like broken glass being avoided, screws being removed from air vents, and barrels scooted out of the way, as ambient noise makes way for the alien clicks of the ever-present enemies somewhere within the building.
Though it’s not explained or elaborated on here, we do see what looks to be some kind of exhaustion or fear mechanic that will undoubtedly be tied to the character’s weezy affliction. Any time we see the player exert themselves by climbing into a vent, for instance, a lung symbol flashes on-screen, lending to the idea that you’ll need to manage how physical you are, in fear of having a loud coughing fit and bringing about your untimely end.
We also get a glimpse of what looks to be some kind of recording device that tracks how loud your actions are. It seems like you’ll be aware of the sound threshold you need to stay below, which will be handy and scary in equal measure if executed well.
From this footage, we get an understanding that The Road Ahead might shake out to be faithful to the source material and quite tense as well, but for how long? I don’t want to be overly negative, especially at this early stage, but I can see silently sneaking around, avoiding crunchy leaves and broken bottles getting old rather fast.
The expanding world of A Quiet Place is an interesting one that seems perfect for a horror game on the surface, but it would be all too easy for The Road Ahead to become a one-trick pony that loses its teeth after a short while. My hope for the franchise’s first foray into the video game medium is that it will throw curveballs at the player, making sure that silent sneaking isn’t the only trick it plays. The story trailer gives us a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it peek at an action sequence involving a shotgun and a van, so maybe I’m being too critical too soon. Either way, I’m eagerly waiting to find out.
