This year, for many reasons, has been kind of a bad time for everybody. I won’t get into it. But you know what weren’t bad times? The Jurassic Era. The Wild West. Ancient Greece. Whenever it was that pirates were kicking about in a big way.
Okay, maybe a lot of those were also bad times, but if you view them through the lens of the opening cinematic to the upcoming Once Upon a KATAMARI it’s all a lot more fun and upbeat.
Yes, to prepare the world for what will undoubtedly be the most healing moment in these incredibly tough times, Bandai Namco has dropped the opener for the new mainline Katamari Damacy game ahead of its October 24th release, and it’s a certified banger.
Backed by a new title track from Japanese rap duo, chelmico, this is two-and-a-bit minutes of pure ball-rolling bliss through a montage of iconic ages through human history. That is, of course, the big spin for this new game – it’s set to take the King and Queen of All Cosmos, their pint-sized Prince, and all of his Cousins on a rollicking ride through space and time.
The teaser also gives us a bit of a glimpse into some of the new gameplay twists that’ll be on offer, including special power-ups like a magnet to draw in nearby objects. And it’s cool to see that the core of the katamari itself will take on different looks based on where you are.
Take a look at it below and rejoice in another absolute bop of a theme song, dubbed “Katamari Time!”
Along with the time-travelling twist, Once Upon a KAMATARI will also debut some neat new features like Cousin customisation and an online mode dubbed KatamariBall, where four players can duke it out over who has the biggest ball.
Once Upon a KATAMARI releases on October 24 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and PC for $54.95. You can find it at the below links:
