Players beating bugs, bots and squids today have discovered a pretty significant update has gone live within Helldivers 2, with some backend changes indicating that the region lock list for the game has been dramatically slashed.
Many moons ago, Helldivers 2 encountered a massive controversy when Sony attempted to mandate a PSN account be necessary to play the game – before the whole thing was wrapped up with a walk-back of the requirement, but having the unfortunate after-effect of the game being delisted in a great many countries. Many valiant Helldivers communicated their dissatisfaction with the outcome by way of a negative game review, and now the time may have arrived the amend that score.
Keen-eyed observers have noticed that the Steam backend has dramatically slashed the amount of blacklisted countries, dropping the number from over a hundred to just a paltry eight regions, with these regions still affected mostly having their own reasons for a block – such as how Japan appears on the list because they technically have their own version of the game that is commercially available for Japanese residents.
It is a monumental change to the games availability – and has prompted a flurry of activity from players, now urging their comrades to lift any negative feedback recorded for the initial block, or to start recruiting their international friends to help with the next galactic campaign, because good god that last one was close.

As for speculation regarding why this has suddenly occurred, many are making mention that the PC release of Shift Up’s Stellar Blade came on the back of a developer-driven push for Sony to take region availability seriously – which likely contributed to the game having stellar (heh) sales numbers in its first week.
Sony could well have understood the assignment and proactively taken the correct steps to get Helldivers 2 up to the same level.
By every metric, it’s a great day for fans of Helldivers 2 across the globe, and paints a good picture for future Sony-published releases coming to PC.
Players are now hopeful that we may finally see the release of the rumoured ‘Review Bomb‘ cape design, and you can count me as one of them. It’s time to dive as one!
