Prime Video has revealed that actor Ryan Hurst will take on the lead role of Kratos in the in-development live-action God of War series.
While God of War was already a PlayStation pillar, Sony Santa Monica’s reinvention of the series brought the Spartan rage machine to completely new heights. Kicking off with 2018’s God of War and followed by God of War Ragnarök in 2022, the more personal and mature tone, combined with a more deliberate gameplay, elevated God of War to one of PlayStation’s greatest properties.
Hot on the heels of Ragnarök’s 2022 release, Amazon greenlit a TV adaptation that would focus on Kratos’ journey through the Norse world of gods and prophecies. According to a Prime Video press release, pre-production is underway, with the first casting announcement confirming that the title character, Kratos, will be portrayed by actor Ryan Hurst. Most well-known for his role as Opie in the TV series Sons of Anarchy, Hurst will return to the God of War franchise, having previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök.

Save for his luscious locks, which will need to have a session with some clippers before he walks on set, Hurst bears a decent resemblance to everyone’s favourite Dad of War. Though it could just be his sculpted beard playing tricks on me.
The press release offers a brief rundown of the series, which sounds like it will follow the events of God of War (2018) quite closely. “God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
With pre-production in full swing in Vancouver, casting will continue, and further announcements will be made. However, we do know that Ronald D. Moore, the showrunner on Outlander and Battlestar Galactica, will take on the role of showrunner, producer, and writer for this series. The press release also confirms that Frederick E.O. Toye, known for directing episodes of The Boys and Fallout, will be taking to the director’s chair for the first two episodes.
