Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has blasted its way nearly to the tippy top of the Video Game Movie leader boards, with figures on Box Office Mojo now recording that the film has earned $462m USD worldwide, beast out the previous number two spot held by Detective Pikachu ($450m USD).

The lofty competition keeping Sonic 3 in that number two spot is of course The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which sits at a colossal $1.26bn USD of earnings – a tough nut to crack, and may well go unanswered until a second Mario movie makes its way to theatres.
Considering the humble (and nightmarish) beginnings of the blue blur’s movie career, it is astonishing to be reading about how the film series not only has three more than serviceable films – but is handily breaking records set over the last few decades. It’s a testament to the efforts of all the passionate people behind these movies, and the care they put into making them fun and fantastic.
Maybe Sonic 4 can claim the top spot when it drops in 2027.
