Nintendo has revealed Star Fox, a ground-up remake of Star Fox 64, coming to the Switch 2 on June 25.
Announced during a dedicated Nintendo Direct that popped up out of thin air, Star Fox is described as being based on the Nintendo 64 original with updated visuals, integrated mouse controls, a new two-player control scheme, and new cutscenes. Outside of the graphical upgrade, the most noticeable change is the character redesign, with the animal members of the titular flying squadron now looking…more lifelike? Fox McCloud now resembles Fantastic Mr Fox, and Slippy Toad is a bit of a nightmare, but the overall visual uplift looks great.
The game’s campaign remains intact, now with added cutscenes for narrative depth. The game’s Challenge mode will let players replay levels with new objectives, while the Battle mode pits players against each other in online confrontations or using GameShare. Another new feature leverages GameChat’s camera function, allowing players to apply an AR filter to their feed, transforming them into one of the members of Star Fox.

Overall, this looks like another remake of Star Fox 64 (or Lylatt Wars, as it’s known to us Aussies). We’ve already seen this kind of treatment applied to re-releases on the 3DS and Wii U (kind of), so I’m not sure what sets this one apart.
