It’s been a bit of a ride for those excited for new Valve hardware. From terrifying component prices and concerning distribution news, people were getting a tad worried that they may never see this stuff come to light.
But lo and behold, the Steam Controller has made it’s way to us all. Not only that, but it will be available to order starting on May 5, priced at $149 in Australian Dolllary-doos. This is all outlined on the Steam store, where you can also get further acquainted with the device:
Frustratingly the time that orders open is displayed in Pacific time, so us Aussies better plan to get up at 3:00AM AEST to try and snag one.
And what of the price, how does $149 Aussie buckaroons feel? For many they are saying it feels a bit steep, but I must implore people to compare it to other market options. It may cost more than a standard Xbox or PlayStation DualSense controller, but it also falls a great deal short of the premium versions of those same peripherals (Seriously, the DualSense Edge was $340!?). This thing is essentially the SteamDeck inputs without the screen and requisite game playing guts, with magnetic thumbsticks, haptic feedback, and gyro motion sensors. If the build quality if anything like the SteamDeck, you’ll be paying good money for a good PC-centric input. And they actually include a charging puck, unlike some modern hardware.
Even if the Steam Machine endures a decade of nightmarish component needs, at least you can translate your SteamDeck finger skills to your PC.
How do you feel about the Steam Controller? Is $149 a bit high for your tastes? What about staying up to 3am to try and grab one? Let us know in the comments or on social media.
