The Pines Is A Solo-Developed Open-World Psychological Horror RPG Where Your Choices Have Consequences

For fans of Alan Wake

Studio Abattoir, a solo-dev team from the Netherlands, has announced its debut game The Pines, an open-world psychological horror RPG where your choices have consequences. And it looks rad.

You play as Edward Walker, a detective who calls it quits after a failed case. Needing some R&R, his therapist encourages him to book himself into The Pines, a secluded retreat with onsite therapists that promises a relaxing and quiet recovery. But upon arrival, Edward realises that The Pines isn’t what it seems.

The game’s Steam page lists the below as its key features:

  • Explore a dense open world filled with secrets, hidden locations, and stories to uncover.

  • Shape Edward Walker through character progression and meaningful choices

  • A deep skill and perk system

  • Uncover side stories and rumors that reveal the truth behind The Pines

  • Investigate clues, connect stories, and decide who to trust

  • Fluid combat with a wide variety of weapons

  • A unique Stalker System that responds to your choices and actions

Check out the announcement trailer below.

The trailer gives off Alan Wake, The Last of Us, and Twin Peaks vibes, and honestly I’m here for it.  Naturally, we need to temper our expectations, as we don’t want another The Day Before situation, but if The Pines can deliver what it’s promising in the trailer, we could be looking at an indie hit.

Studio Abattoir hasn’t announced any release date information yet, but both Steam and the trailer mention that it’s “coming soon,” so hopefully we get to go hands-on with it in the near future.
