Developer Santa Monica Studios has lifted the curtain on its next title, God of War Laufey.
Taking the coveted spot as the show-closing reveal for this morning’s PlayStation State of Play showcase, Laufey is the next mainline entry in the God of War series, as confirmed by a lengthy PlayStation Blog post. And the announcement was befitting of a major mainline entry, with an uninterrupted look at the first 20 minutes of gameplay, complete with a hefty look at traversal, combat, the game’s new protagonist, and its otherworldly new setting.
Stepping away from the rage-filled pale protagonist we’re used to, Laufey puts players in the pauldrons of Faye, the deceased mother of Atreus and wife to Kratos. That’s right, deceased. Waking after her own funeral pyre to find herself in an unfamiliar place, she ventures forth into the unknown, clashing almost immediately with beings from various lands. The new world is the Everywhen, an afterlife for the gods, but not a peaceful one. We see Faye come face -to-face with Sekhmet, the Egyptian god of war, and Begtse, the Buddhist, you guessed it, god of war. This new setting appears to be a melting pot of different myths and legends, opening the door for all kinds of possibilities.
In terms of gameplay, we see Faye kicking all kinds of ass, with a much faster and more kinetic set of abilities. Air juggling enemies, blasting foes with Jötnar magic, separating their spirits from their bodies, and eventually wielding a mysterious sword with unchecked power. It still looks like the God of War we know, but with a new twist that should mix things up quite nicely.

Personal opinion time.
This looks rad. Rumours of a Faye-led game have been circulating for the longest time now, and I’ve not known what to make of them. Would she play like Kratos? Would there still be a primary focus on combat? Would it be a prequel? Those questions have largely been answered with this reveal, and I’m coming away from it incredibly excited. Altering combat, but keeping it true to what this new God of War is on a fundamental level, is exactly what I would hope for in the next game in the series.
We don’t have any release information just yet, save for a vague “coming soon,” so we’ll have to hold out for more info. We do know that it’s coming to PS5, but that’s not exactly news.
