TT Games Would Be Interested In Revisiting Past IPs Provided The Team “Continue To Evolve And Try Different Things”

Same blocks, new build

UK-based developer TT Games could revisit and rework another of its previously worked-on properties, as long as the team sees a creative benefit in doing so.

During a recent preview event for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, I had the opportunity to interview Bob Scott, the game’s Cinematics Animation Director, who spoke to me about the team’s focus on creating an engaging combat system and the wide variety of reference points the game pulled from. Much of our conversation revolved around the strides that Legacy of the Dark Knight is making in advancing the LEGO series in terms of gameplay depth and player engagement, a trend kicked off by the team’s previous release, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

With Legacy of the Dark Knight being the second mechanical reevaluation under its belt for TT Games, I asked Scott if the team would consider returning to any of the other IPs they have worked on in the past, with the intention of reworking them in a similar fashion.

“Yes. Yes is the answer, he said. “Well, I don’t like the idea of looking back. And I think that with Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, we’ve gone story-first. We’ve really leaned into putting the story centre stage so that everything fits with that, fueling the narrative as well as the gameplay. So I would really love to see us continue to evolve and try different things going forward. But not lose who we are, you know, and I think that’s also important.”

TT Games has been developing LEGO titles for over 20 years, with the first being LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game in 2005. Throughout the years, the studio has LEGOfied gigantic properties, such as Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, The Lord of the Rings, and Pirates of the Caribbean. While Scott didn’t say that revisiting previous IPs is the way forward for TT Games, it would be incredible to see this new approach to gameplay applied to some of these beloved franchises.

LEGO games of times gone by were far more straightforward and mechanically basic, requiring little more than a few button prompts to complete combat encounters and progress. The Skywalker Saga saw the introduction of a tighter camera perspective, a cover system, and various other improvements to gameplay, while Legacy of the Dark Knight is poised to take combat engagements even further by implementing Arkham-style brawling mechanics.

“We spent a long time developing the combat,” Scott said, “making sure that it was fluid and easily accessible, but there was enough nuance there, and you can upgrade it so you can play and develop the style if you want to, but you can also just go through vanilla the whole way if you want.”
