Ubisoft has reportedly binned a sequel to its 2020 open-world RPG Immortals Fenyx Rising according to sources that have spoken to VGC.
VGC reports that the sequel in development by Ubisoft Quebec, who also developed the original, was cancelled by Ubisoft management due to “perceived challenges around establishing the IP,” and that Ubisoft’s desire to focus on its big-name franchises led to several sources questioning the future of Immortals.
In 2020, in our Immortal Fenyx Rising review we scored it a 9, saying that “Immortals is more than just a fun open-world with slick combat and massive Breath of the Wild vibes, it’s also a superbly written and legitimately funny take on Greek mythology.”
Ubisoft is no stranger to cancellations, with the French company cancelling three unannounced games in January 2023, citing challenges in the industry as it shifts towards “mega-brands” for the chop coming down. The company further said that it is continuing to focus on IPs like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon and The Division in an effort to make them “truly global brands.”
