WellPlayed’s Video Game Predictions For 2025

These are spoilers, not predictions

There’s an art to making accurate and entertaining predictions. You need to have your finger on the industry’s pulse, you need a keen eye for trends, and you need the courage to make outside bets. The fine folks of WellPlayed aren’t in the business of making predictions or guesses, though, because our powers of perception and foresight are borderline mystical.

The members of the WellPlayed team have read the video game tea leaves to bring you a series of certainties to ensure you know what to expect from 2025. Let’s go ahead and call these “predictions” just to keep the suspense alive, but we all know you can take these dot points to the bank.

Here are WellPlayed’s gaming predictions for 2025:

James

  • Assassin’s Creed Shadow underperforms and Ubisoft undergoes a massive restructuring resulting in unprecedented industry layoffs
  • Capcom announces RE9 and RE5 Remake at the same time as they bring the franchise continuity in line
  • Nintendo will re-release its best Switch titles as enhanced Switch 2 games at full price each
  • Xbox will give up the ghost and finally embrace being a third-party publisher, publicly stating all of its major titles will be ported to Switch 2 and PS5 within six months of the Xbox launch
  • The cultural shift beginning in places like Meta will start to seep into gaming as we see a collective shift back to edgier comments and broader anti-DEI sentiments
  • Game Pass on Switch 2

Ash

  • Xbox will announce a handheld. It won’t be anything exciting or bespoke like the old days, like the PS Vita or Switch 2. Instead, it will be a lacklustre, prebuilt porta-PC imitation Steam Deck or ROG Ally, etc. The name will likely be goofy and do no favours for the current round of funny Microsoft gaming optics out there.
  • SEGA keeps the Sonic momentum going with an announcement of Sonic Frontiers 2.
  • Valve will announce a title that isn’t Deadlock.
  • Sega will announce a Dreamcast Mini. People will be overjoyed, before realising it is lacking at least one of the Sonic Adventure games. What the hell, Sega?
  • The beloved child of Xbox, Master Chief, will jump ship to another console outside of the Microsoft family. Only no, it aint PlayStation, the Master Chief Collection is coming to the Switch 2 baby.
  • ANOTHER Resident Evil reboot film is announced. Maybe they will get it right this time.

Adam

  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will garner a high 80s Metacritic score, sparking a new long-running RPG series.
  • Housemarque will tease its next project in April, coinciding with Returnal’s fourth anniversary. It will be a return to Resogun but with a stronger story focus.
  • We won’t see Perfect Dark in 2025, except for a random Phil Spencer Tweet that complements the game’s development progress. Late in the year, a report from Bloomberg will state that the game is getting a complete rework.
  • While celebrating the year that was, Phil Spencer will announce that he is leaving Xbox in early 2026.
  • Hollow Knight: Silksong, Fable, Metroid Prime 4, and Little Devil Inside will all be released in 2025.
  • Devolver Digital throws its hat into retro gaming, publishing physical games for Gameboy, GBA, N64, etc.
  • Bluepoint will finally reveal what game it has been working on: Resistance.

Zach

  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows will have a higher meta score in 2025 than Ghost of Yotei
  • GTA6 will launch this year but won’t win GOTY
  • Phil Spencer will step down as Xbox chief after another big round of layoffs or studio closure
  • Far Cry 7 will be announced but will have a co-publisher
  • Fairgame$ will be delayed indefinitely
  • TimeSplitters 2 HD Remaster will be announced and released on the same day
  • Broken Sword 6 will not release but we will get a new gameplay trailer and it will be announced as Charles Cecil’s last game as director

Mark

  • Let’s get the obvious out of the way first. Nintendo will release the first-ever open-world Super Mario 3D platformer in October, as part of the Switch 2’s launch window catalogue
  • Nintendo goes all in on Donkey Kong for 2025, announcing a new entry in the Donkey Kong Country series, a Donkey Kong animated movie (from the team behind the Super Mario Bros. movie) and a partnership with Microsoft and Rare on Donkey Kong 64 Remastered
  • Valve will announce a new Half-Life game, but it’s not HL3, to launch alongside the Steam Deck 2
  • Sony tries to sell Bungie to recoup the Concord loss
  • Ubisoft sells out to Tencent and finally confirms Beyond Good & Evil 2 is cancelled for good
  • Rocksteady goes back to basics with a dark, gritty Batman: Arkham reboot after the failed Suicide Squad experiment. However, Warner Bros. instantly throws some weird bullshit all over it and ruins it again because Warner Bros.
  • Xbox launches the Xbox Series XL in response to the PS5 Pro, a ‘last hurrah’ before ending console hardware manufacturing from 2026 (I think I said that last year, but it feels even more likely now)
  • Bloodborne doesn’t get patched. Ever.

Kieron

  • Mario Kart 9 will be a Switch 2 launch title and a free-to-start game. You can buy the whole thing outright or play it for free and buy extra stuff later
  • PlayStation will cancel another live-service title, probably Fairgame$
  • PlayStation will finally open data centres in Australia to allow for game streaming
  • Geoff Keighley will pass away
  • Xbox will sell or spin off multiple studios that it has bought and not released anything out of
  • The next God of War will be announced with a very quick turnaround and a new setting
  • Off the back of the handheld boom, we will see a rise in micro PCs that run SteamOS and plug straight into your TV

Nathan

  • Metal Gear Solid Delta will score within a few points of the original Snake Eater
  • Sony announces a standalone Portal device but will avoid the Portal name altogether. It will retail in Australia for as much more than a PSVR2
  • Valve will show off a new Half-Life similar to Half-Life: Alyx
  • A report will show that Hazelight employees secretly fear Josef Fares. Not because he’s a pest but because they hate having to deal with his energy
  • Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodline 2 surprises everyone by being a polished and ambitious interactive sim RPG. It sells a million copies in its first month
  • Uh oh, the Switch 2 Joy-Cons all have stick drift as well. Nintendo is oddly silent following the global outcry, and kids veer into the abyss while playing Mario Kart 9
  • Wind Waker and Twilight Princess end up on a Nintendo handheld

Like them, love them, hate them, those are the facts in advance for 2025. And hey, not one mentioned a GTA VI delay; maybe it’ll actually see the light of day this year.
