What We Want From FIFA 17

John discusses what he wants to see in the next FIFA!

They say that there are only two things in life that are certain and that is death and taxes. Of course, there is another certainty in life and that is a new FIFA game each year. We’re yet to hear anything at all about FIFA 17 but it’s getting to that time of the year when we can expect to get some news. Last week CEO Andrew Wilson went on record stating FIFA 17 will be a “major leap forward in personalization, immersion and competition.” We’ve got some serious FIFA gamers here at DYEGB and not a week goes by that we aren’t calling bullshit on our losses and wondering how it all went so wrong. When we’re not playing the game we’re thinking about it so I thought about some of the things I would like to see in FIFA 17 to give the game that extra pizzazz.

What a beauty!

I’m a FIFA gamer from way back when (I think I first played 96) and I’ve never stopped loving the game. I will admit, I have recently started to become weary with 16 because of its ridiculous passing mechanics and the ease of defending (except when I try to defend). There is a perfect FIFA game just waiting to be made and for mine it would start with the following things. Firstly, EA need need need to look at the offside mechanic they use. I’m so sick of being in an offside position when the ball is played, only to run back onside to receive the ball and have the assistant raise his flag. It could even be 5-10 seconds later that my player receives the ball yet it is still called. That’s the first thing that needs to be changed.

Imagine playing with David Luiz on your team and having him beat the absolute shit out of Mesut Ozil just because you can!

The second thing I’d like to see is a higher level of customisation in Manager Mode. I want to be able to manage my career the way I want, I also want to have a multitude of options to choose from when discussing my career. I feel, up to this point, it has been far too limited. Thirdly, I would absolutely love to see a story mode. Now I know that you’re probably thinking Manager Mode or Be A Pro is a story mode and for the most part you’d be right, but what I’m talking about is having a full cinematic experience where you can take charge of a team or player and actually be part of their story. How incredible would it be to replay Leicester’s season with another club and be right in the thick of the action? I want to be able to see my choices affecting the player’s actions, I want to be able to start out as a 16 year old that gets scouted into a youth academy in the hope of making the big time. In previous games we have been given stats to show how much has been earned in a career or the accolades we have received but ultimately they mean nothing. I want to be able to spend the money I have on a house, car and other useless rubbish (like a golden toilet). In addition to this I think press conferences need a real shake-up. I’d like to see managers sitting down at a conference table and have meters that show player or team morale and chemistry etc. that changes based on the responses you give. You could also have pre-match press conferences that have meters for other team’s attitude heading into the match. Their confidence could go up or down based on the responses. As it stands there’s no point in holding a press conference because they don’t really mean anything.

Phwoar! Imagine this bad boy in your home!

Oftentimes I will create a player career with a mate where we edit the team to put both of us in. An addition that would make a lot of people happy would be to allow online career mode where you can join friends in a server and each person has their own career within it. You could request trades to their team or battle against their teams during a season. It would also be cool to have the option of playing on and offline so that you can verse each other within the career or continue on with certain limitations to keep friends at around about the same level. Obviously the intricacies would have to be worked out but I believe it’s achievable.

An elephant you say…

In 16 we started to see the crowds become a bit livelier and it’s better than it has been but there’s still room for improvement. I’d like to see specific chants used for different situations like a team going 2-0 up and having their supporters chant to that effect. Some realism in having games stopped for fans’ intrusions or flares in the crowd would be awesome but not altogether needed really.

The last thing I would love to see would be a ‘fun’ mode of sorts. A mode where you can customise the rules by removing the offside rule or allowing your players to fight. I know the FIFA purists amongst us will cry havoc at that suggestion but I really feel like the franchise needs a shake-up. Imagine playing with David Luiz on your team and having him beat the absolute shit out of Mesut Ozil just because. I just feel like it could add another element of fun to this already excellent game by allowing friends to create whacky, messed-up scenarios to play while drinking on a boys’ night. Within this mode you could even allow customisation options for pitches, balls, players and even nets. Imagine the fun that could ensue from playing with Real Madrid and having Ronaldo dressed in a giant elephant costume. These sorts of tweaks and customisations could be used to create challenges and rewards each week. As part of the fun mode, something I have wanted since the introduction of women’s teams is cross-play with men’s teams. This could be incorporated within fun mode for extra bragging rights when Australia’s women’s team beats the German men’s team or something similar.

Get around them!

Of course there are plenty of other changes that could be implemented and I’m sure you have your own ideas about what you would like to see in FIFA 17. I don’t play FUT so I haven’t included anything for that in this article. If you have some ideas about what you would like to see in the next game leave us a comment.
