Who Needs Phones – Diablo Immortal Will Be Available To Play On PC

Crush the hordes of hell with a PC open beta starting June 2

Turns out Hell is indeed everywhere, with the big announcement from Blizzard that their controversial phone-based Diablo Immortal is in fact coming to PC as well.

Nothing to interpret, the news was pretty direct – the experience may be made for mobile, but it isn’t destined to be locked to it.

My experience with the closed alpha and various beta offerings identified that the game was more than competent, and downright fun at times – just that I wasn’t a fan of annihilating my battery life to monster mash. Not to mention that some app platforms had already announced plans to make mobile-bound titles playable on PC. It just seemed like a no brainer for Blizzard to cut out a few steps.

And that seems to be just what they are doing.

Following the announcement, Blizzard also shared an official blog post, aptly titled Making Diablo Immortal for PC, to go over some insights.

A quote encapsulates the logic behind the decision – no surprise that they wanted to avoid people having to fiddle around with emulators:

The decision to develop Diablo Immortal for PC was one that the team went back and forth on for a large part of the development process. On one hand, we felt that we wouldn’t be doing the title justice by releasing a game originally designed for mobile on PC; on the other hand, we wanted to make sure the game reached as many players as possible—especially our most dedicated PC fans. In the end, the deciding factor was that we knew many of you would attempt to play this game through an emulator, thus leading us towards building a better experience.

There is also some fairly amazing stats to back up why locking a title to a Mobile-only platform can be considered silly, when you take a look at some other titles that have absolutely gone bananas with not only cross platform releases, but cross-play for the community:

Genshin Impact, the fantasy ARPG mobile game released by Chinese developer miHoYo, launched with full PC support as well, and grossed over $400 million in the US in 2021. For the highest-grossing mobile game of 2021, PUBG Mobile, publisher Tencent released official PC emulator support back in 2018. Last year, players spent over $2 billion on the mobile adaption of the iconic battle royale title.

Sure, those factoids are super cash-driven – but it’s a refreshing level of awareness considering how many people were asking for Diablo Immortal to come to PC for no other reason than being a Diablo fan.

The Diablo Immortal PC blog post then covers some excellent direction on how Blizzard is working to make the PC version of the game feel authentic, with details covering the necessary changes to UI options, controls, etc.

For many, this could be just the news they wanted to try out a new Diablo offering while waiting for the mainline instalment of Diablo IV to come out – it will be curious to see if the many disillusioned parties that wrote off the game give it a punt now.
