Activision and Treyarch have stepped in to clear the air, confirming that the enormous projected install size of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is an error.
Following the Call of Duty Direct, pre-orders for the next instalment went live on the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, but all this did was raise eyebrows and drop jaws. While the PlayStation and PC store listings are nothing to sneeze at, the Xbox store shows are a rather alarming bit of info. Under additional info, the game’s listing shows an approximate install size of 309.85 GB, which, in my humble opinion, is absolutely insane.
For reference, let’s take a look at the install size for some of today’s girthier games:
- Red Dead Redemption 2 – 105.42 GB
- Baldur’s Gate 3 – 137.79 GB
- Destiny 2 – 137.79 GB
- Starfield – 152.95 GB
- Microsoft Flight Simulator – 157 GB
I could go on, but you get the picture, it’s a ludicrous size that rightfully had anyone keen on the upcoming shooter sweating. But wait, before you go ordering a new SSD to accommodate this big fella, you should know that this listing is fibbing.
According to the Call of Duty Updates X account, the Xbox Store’s product page install size includes Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Warzone, all content packs, and all localised language packs. It’s not exactly clear why this is the case, and the post confirms that players will be able to install Black Ops 6 on its own, but it’s relieving all the same.
Correction: The estimated file size currently displayed on the Black Ops 6 pre-order pages does not represent the download size or disk footprint for Black Ops 6.
The sizes as shown include the full installations of Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Warzone…

We don’t know what Black Ops 6’s install will be, but it’s nice to know that I won’t need to purge my PS5 completely just to get my CoD fix.
