Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Development Team Has Reportedly Been Disbanded Because We Can’t Have Nice Things

The crown isn’t the only thing we’ve lost

According to a new report, the Ubisoft Montpellier team responsible for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has been disbanded, and support for the title has ceased.

Coming from a video from the French independent media outlet ORIGAMI, the belief is that the team that developed the critically lauded Metroidvania Prince of Persia title has been dissolved and will be moved back to continue work on Beyond Good and Evil 2. Host Gauthier Andres claims that sources he spoke to within the team stated that the game was “the best production” they had worked on, with some even insinuating that working on the Prince of Persia product was a “rehabilitation zone” for those who were disillusioned after extended work on Beyond Good and Evil 2, which has notoriously been stuck in development for years.

Andres continues to say that developers had pitched potential sequel and DLC ideas to Ubisoft management, but with sales figures for The Lost Crown being “below expectations,” the decision was made for staff to be moved to support more financially promising projects. Worst of all, it seems that the decision to pull the plug on the title was made shortly after release, with the Mask of Darkness DLC not moving the needle anywhere near enough to change any corporate minds.

It’s no real surprise that Ubisoft would be looking to trim projects with smaller financial returns, seeing as though Star Wars: Outlaws reportedly underperformed and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows has been delayed out of this year, but it doesn’t make the news any less disappointing. While I understand that the short-term appeal of shifting focus to the biggest game with the biggest return on investment looks attractive, I would argue that Ubisoft is in desperate need of a shot in the arm when it comes to creativity and originality, and I’m not convinced that Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will deliver on that front.

In any case, we loved The Lost Crown, giving it a huge 9.5 in our review, saying, “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is an expertly executed series revival that displays the best of Ubisoft Montpellier’s pedigree while pushing the action-platformer to new highs.”
