June 2025’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Revealed

Days of Play indeed

PlayStation’s Days of Play celebration has started for 2025, so our monthly blue brand update looks a little different in June. By different, I mostly mean that we’re getting an extra game added to our regular three, but there are a few other bonuses scattered around here and there are well.

As announced on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essentials games for June are NBA 2K25, Alone in the Dark, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk and Destiny 2: The Final Shape. The Final Shape will be available from tomorrow, with the remaining three hitting the service on June 3.

I’m far from an expert on basketball, and I’m even less educated when it comes to the games based on the sport, but the NBA titles seem to sell like no one’s business every year. NBA 2K25 didn’t make any major reworks or additions to the formula, instead iterating on the series and charging people to build their perfect team…again. Sorry, I’m more of a WWE 2K man myself.

Reviving the survival horror series that had been dormant since 2008, Alone in the Dark aimed to make a comeback and reestablish the IP within the genre. With Jodie Comer and David Harbour starring as the lead protagonists and a wealth of history to pull from, there were hopes that developer Pieces Interactive might pull it off. Unfortunately, outside of some solid enough survival horror mechanics, Alone in the Dark only offers a wonky narrative and lacklustre combat, making this one worth leaving in the dark. We gave it a 5.5 in our review.

If you’re sitting there thinking, “Huh, this looks a lot like Jet Set Radio“, you’re not alone. A movement-based action game that prioritises exploring an environment in the funniest way possible, Bomb Rush Cyberpunk developers Team Reptile seem to have grown tired of Seag sitting on its beloved franchise that the team decided to do it themselves. Running, grinding, tagging and flipping your way around a cell-shaded city will feel nostalgic for some, and weirdly half nostalgic for the rest of us who never played Jet Set, but knew a friend who was obsessed with it.

Now for the cheeky little add-on. Destiny 2 was released in September 2017, and it’s been through a rollercoaster of post-launch content. From expansions that had fans exclaiming Destiny is back to others that had the same fans saying Destiny is crap. The Final Shape looks to be more than just a name, with Bungie moving on to Marathon and Destiny 2’s content pipeline featuring smaller DLCs in favour of expansions. So, if this is the final shape, will fans be happy? Nah, they’re never truly happy, but the expansion did a lot of things right, including the Prismatic system and the new raid, so that counts for something. Can someone finally tell me what the hell the Traveller is, please?

But wait, there’s more. You couldn’t exactly call it a celebration if we just got one extra game. The Days of Play goodies include a freshen-up to the Extra/Deluxe Game Catalogue as well, with the following games being added to the ever-changing list:

PlayStation Plus Extra/Deluxe

  • Another Crab’s Treasure | PS5 (available May 29)
  • Skull and Bones | PS5 (available June 2)
  • Destiny 2: Legacy Collection | PS5, PS4 (available June 4)
  • Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition | PS4, PS5 (available June 10)

PlayStation Plus Deluxe

  • Myst | PS5, PS4 (available June 5)
  • Riven | PS5, PS4 (available June)

I won’t use any enlarged fonts for this one, but there are also two games getting Game Trials as part of Days of Play as well. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will offer some demo time to PlayStation Plus members to try before you buy.

Which game will you be downloading first? What games would you like to see in July? Let us know in the comments or on our social media.
