LEGO Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight’s Batcave Is More Than A Hub, It’s An Interactive Bat-Museum

A cave of Bat-wonders

Fresh off bringing Carmine Falcone in, thwarting Two-Face’s attempt to destroy Haley’s Circus, and going face-to-flora with Poison Ivy, I was ready to hit the mean streets of an open-world Gotham City. It was teased to me earlier in my preview of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, so I was all too keen to glide through the skies, peel around corners in the Batmobile, and catch criminals red-handed in the name of brick-based justice.

All I had to do was make a pit stop at the Batcave, grab the keys to my preferred Batmobile, and be on my crime-fighting way. That, in my infinite ignorance, was how I envisioned it playing out. The Batcave would be a hub area where I could do some rudimentary things, like pick missions and upgrade my stats, but it would be a glorified menu, right? Wrong.

Greeted by Alfred as I entered the Batcave, I was almost immediately assured how wrong my initial assessment was. Not only is Legacy of the Dark Knight’s Batcave a fully explorable space, but it’s also a lovingly constructed museum dedicated to the Caped Crusader’s 87-year history.

Yes, you can access levels and upgrade your combat abilities here, but you’ll be doing so at the infamous Batcomputer. It’s a thematic decision that echoes throughout the entire space, with your garage of unlocked Batmobiles displayed gloriously in the centre of the cave, and each of the 100 outfits worn by the playable characters on show on a truly impressive array of mannequins that would make any retail fashion worker have heart palpitations. For accessibility, you can swap outfits and vehicles on the fly in the open world, but giving each of your collected suits, Batcycles, and outfits a place to live where you can admire them just feels right.

A Bat-Mite store is tucked away in one of the caverns (he’s a Fourth-Dimensional Imp; he has his ways), giving you instant access to unlockables you can purchase with your collected studs. You’re not just buying cosmetics for the Batfamily, though, as Bat-Mite The Store also offers trinkets and a range of furnishings to customise your Batcave, making it your own. Want to install a bunch of arcade cabinets near the Batcomputer so Bruce can easily access some stress relief? Go for it. Would some workout equipment near the suits make sense for a quick pump before posing in the Bat-Mirror? Be my guest.

You won’t be reliving your Sims glory days with a Batman filter on, but the level of customisation here gives you the perfect level of control and personalisation over the already brilliant space. The game is bursting with references, easter eggs, and homages to the storied history of Batman, with the Batcave being a prime example of TT Games’ reverence for the hero. This could easily have been a throwaway space that players only interact with when they need to, but, coming away from my time with Legacy of the Dark Knight, the Batcave is where I want to hang out the most.
