A New Overwatch Tank Approaches, But Who Could It Be

They may have been lurking under our nose this whole time

With the Overwatch League in full swing, there is one big point of excitement away from the bloodshed – a new Overwatch hero WILL be announced during the finals!

We also had another small confirmation prior to the unveiling, the fact the hero WILL be classed as a Tank. So what characters might be coming out of the shadows? What resources can we draw from to speculate? Let’s take a wild dive into theory-crafting with three somewhat established overwatch lore people (?) that could fit the bill.

Mauga

This bloke is already deeply entrenched within the Overwatch lore –  mentioned more than a few times when detailing the backstory of Baptiste’s time with Talon. An interesting character that seems to have a healthy amount of respect for allies (he openly let Bap defect from Talon) but a deeply concerning lack of care when it comes to collateral damage and innocent bystanders.

The curious thing is that Mauga was openly in development to enter the game as a new tank, but was then replaced by Sigma at the last minute! Developers mentioned that once they had established the kit of abilities that defined the rock-chucking mad lad, it just didn’t feel like Mauga. So a recast took place, and Mauga was re-benched. Described as a hulking dude with access to shielding abilities, he is absolutely going to enter the game as a tank eventually.

Unnamed Spooky Omnic Man

We have a lot of good-guy omnics in the game (regardless of how some people may feel about Bastion), so it’d be a right awesome time to see one that is closer to the ‘Kill All Humans’ rhetoric of say, Bender from Futurama.

Appearing at the end of the Storm Rising PvE campaign in a cinematic where he has some words with Doomfist, the clearly-evil omnic dude (named Null Hector by fans) is dealing with Talon in some way. Unlike Mauga, this dude has a fully created 3D model (at least, that we have seen) so it might be time to introduce some robo-bad to the game.

Jetpack Cat

This may just be wishful thinking, but considering this is official concept art I can only dream that something this absurd could one day be made reality. According to Blizzard development, this is apparently where they ‘drew the line’ when it came to crazier concepts. A hamster piloting a robotic wrecking ball is okay – but a flying cat is a step too far.

Funnily enough, some references to Jetpack cat have ended up in the game – Brigitte actually canonically has a cat that she has made armor for, and even has an emote where she gives the kitty some pets and cuddles in game.

Why not strap on a Jetpack and call it a day?
