A New Splinter Cell Is Reportedly In Early Development

Could Sam be making a comeback?

A new report by Video Games Chronicle suggests that a new entry into the long-dormant Splinter Cell series is currently in early development at Ubisoft.

VGC claims that multiple “development sources” have said that a new game in the beloved stealth franchise is in very early production at Ubisoft, though there’s no word on which studio will be helming the project. The report also claims that this new title will be in response to fan backlash, specifically in relation to the IP popping up in mobile games and other franchises rather than Sam Fisher getting a new game of his own.

VGC’s sources claim that this new project is very far from release, as it’s still in the early production phases, but an official announcement could be seen as early as next year.

There hasn’t been a mainline Splinter Cell release since Blacklist back in 2013, meaning that it’ll likely be a decade between releases. Blacklist received a decent critical reception, sitting at a respectable 82 on MetaCritic, though some were put off by its dwindled focus on stealth.

Keep in mind that this is far from an official announcement, so don’t get your hopes up that Mr Fisher will be back behind the goggles just yet.

Would you be keen to see Splinter Cell return? Did you enjoy Blacklist as much as WellPlayed’s Jordan Garcia? Let us know in the comments or on our social media.
