A TMNT Game Based On The Last Ronin And Inspired By God Of War Is In The Works

Grim turtle in a shell of anger

Paramount Global has revealed that a AAA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game is in development, based on the incredibly popular The Last Ronin graphic novel.

Speaking with Polygon, Paramount Global’s Senior Vice President for games and emerging media, Doug Rosen, detailed that a new third-person action RPG based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is currently in development at an unnamed studio. During the interview, Rosen claimed that the AAA title will be “authentic to the story of The Last Ronin.”

For those unfamiliar, The Last Ronin is a graphic novel written by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird and Tom Waltz, and is set after an apocalyptic event leaves New York decimated and ruled by the Foot Clan, with only one of the four crime-fighting brothers still alive. This darker, more violent turtle (whose identity I won’t spoil here) wields all of his brother’s iconic weapons in a bid to take down Oroku Hrioto, the grandson of Shredder.

The game will have a single-player focus, though Rosen did hint that “other characters could be playable in flashback sequences, similar to how the comic series plays out,” though the bulk of the action will revolve around the titular hero.

Interestingly, Rosen claimed that the game will be somewhat in the same vein as the recent God of War titles, though the specifics of that comparison weren’t elaborated on. While the studio behind the project wasn’t named, Rosen claimed that “[Paramount] found the right partner to adapt The Last Ronin into an ambitious AAA video game.” The title is still “a few years off,” but hopefully, we hear more about the exciting project soon.
