Atari Has Bought The Rights To Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 For A Cool $7 Million

Another Rollercoaster feather in their cap

Atari has set out to become the ultimate tycoon of Rollercoaster Tycoon games, purchasing the rights to Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 from developer Frontier for a whopping 7 million clams.

It effectively means that Atari will be the sole publisher for the title moving forward.

That isn’t to say that Atari is new to ‘owning’ Rollercoaster Tycoon games – Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 is far from the first game that they have slunk into their portfolio, with other titles under their belt including:

  • Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic
  • Rollercoaster Tycoon 2
  • Rollercoaster Tycoon Deluxe
  • Rollercoaster Tycoon Joyride
  • Rollercoaster Tycoon World
  • Rollercoaster Tycoon Puzzle
  • Rollercoaster Tycoon Touch.

That’s a lot of rollercoasters. In details shared on Eurogamer, it plays into the long and problem filled history that has existed between Atari and Frontier – mostly surrounding how Atari had mismanaged royalty payments to Frontier for RCT3, and a gloriously silly moment where Atari tried to crowdfund a RollerCoaster Tycoon port for the Nintendo Switch, because players love it when monolithic corporations say they need money to make things happen.

For Atari, the ownership of Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 leaves them holding all the gems for their rollercoaster Infinity Gauntlet; but fans might be left a little concerned with what that means for their beloved series moving forward.

To outright steal a gag from Eurogamer’s Editor-in-Chief Tom Phillips – you can personally buy Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 on Steam for a lot less than 7 Million USD, so maybe get in quick before the machinations of Atari shift the rollercoaster space as we know it.
