May 2024’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Been Revealed

The beautiful games

The PlayStation Plus monthly output has been pretty stellar this year, with the first four months giving us bangers like A Plague Tale: Requiem, Evil West, and Sifu, to name but a few. The run of excellent updates doesn’t look to be slowing, either, with the latest line-up throwing some cracker titles our way. April alone gave us Immortals of Aveum, Minecraft Legends and Skul: The Hero Slayer. If you’ve already plowed through those games, then good news, there are more on the horizon.

As announced on the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Plus Essential games for May are EA Sports FC 24, Ghostrunner 2, Tunic and Destiny 2: Lightfall. These three games, and one expansion, will be available to download from May 7.

SIUUUUU! That’s a soccer celebration thing, yeah? Ronaldo? I don’t know. I’m far from a soccer expert, so I’ll defer to our resident football fan, Zach. In his review, Zach said, “On the pitch, EA Sports FC 24 provides a promising foundation for EA to build on thanks to some strong gameplay improvements, but off the pitch it still needs a bit more love.” See, I couldn’t have said it any better myself. We gave the first non-FIFA title an 8, so those who enjoy the beautiful game will be pleased to see its inclusion this month.

The elevator pitch for the original Ghostrunner ticked a lot of boxes for a lot of people because parkouring through a cyberpunk city as a cyborg ninja is undeniably badarse. So, how do you up the ante for the sequel? Easy, add in a motorbike that can speed across walls. It’s not all helmets and synthwave though; Ghostrunner 2 is devilishly challenging because as tough as you look, you’ll go down in a single hit. Find your rhythm, and don’t slow down. We gave Ghostrunner a 9 in our review.

From one game that looks challenging and is, to one that looks cute but is hard as nails. Tunic will lure you in with the promise of an adorable fox protagonist, then keep you with its throwback sensibilities and dungeon-exploring gameplay. Filling in your instruction manual as you uncover details in the world gives the game an old-school feel, while the boss fights and puzzling will put your brain and reaction time to the test. We gave Tunic a 9 in our review.

In March, PlayStation Plus members were given access to the Destiny 2 expansion, The Witch Queen. Now, in May, the trend continues, with Lightfall being the next DLC on the menu. Introducing a new Strand subclass, this expansion has your Guardian flying around like Spider-Man while fighting back against a new enemy threat in a whole new location. We had mixed feelings about this one, giving it a 6.5 in court review, but it’s likely to be required reading for The Final Shape, so get in there and get that context.

If you haven’t downloaded Immortals of Aveum, Minecraft Legends and Skul: The Hero Slayer, you’ve got until May 6 to do so. As always, please remember that you can add these games to your library and download them later if you don’t have any precious space on your hard drive.

Which game will you be downloading first? What games would you like to see in June? Let us know in the comments or on our social media.
