Borderlands 4 has showcased the fourth and final member of it’s initial Vault Hunter cast, introducing Harlowe the Gravitar – a science whiz who has many ties to the Maliwan corporate, both by family and employment means.
With a bag of tricks both deep and diabolical, Harlowe has many unique methods to disrupt the denizens of Kairos – including nuking the battlefield with both Cryo and Radiation damage.
Take a squiz at the gameplay reveal:
The ability to bubble people sure seems like a great callback to Borderlands 1, where Lilith did her phase prison fun. Harlowe is also more than willing to lend a hand, with support abilities beyond just disabling a dork – with the video description mentioning advanced shielding:
Harlowe the Gravitar is a former Maliwan combat scientist, driven by the need to understand how things work. Nothing says “power fantasy” like wiping out waves of enemies with a combination of crowd-control abilities and area-of-effect annihilation—both of which happen to be her specialty! Using her collection of combat-ready inventions, Harlowe can dominate any space by nuking the battlefield with Cryo and Radiation damage, or protect herself and co-op allies with enhanced shielding and more.
There is also a fun narrative hook to Harlowe’s existence, being that she is a part of the brilliantly dysfunctional Traunt family, known for their vast and varied family tree and deep ties to the Maliwan corporate.
Family business is a rocky business though, with more than a few of them having met their end in various ways – and Harlow even encounters her brother in the most recent character short:
Dead siblings? Happens more often than you might think. Even the casual mention of a ‘Funeral Cascade’ has me thinking that the Traunt family dinners must be a seriously worrying affair.
This brings to bear the initial release cast of Vault Hunters that awaits the September 12 release of Borderlands 4, and I can confidently say it has done me no favours in helping me pick a character. Each one of these spectacular loose cannons have a bafflingly fun flavour and kit, so I might as well just throw a dart at a board and see what awaits me.
Hopefully your experience is less trying than mine.
