Capcom Has No Plans To Make A New Resident Evil Outbreak Game According To Requiem’s Producer

Although, he would like a new Outbreak

Capcom has no plans to make a new Resident Evil Outbreak game according to Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa.

I had the opportunity to chat with Kumazawa last week, and given Requiem’s main character Grace Ashcroft is the daughter of Outbreak’s Alyssa Ashcroft, and that I loved the Outbreak games when they released on the PS2, I just had to ask whether Capcom had plans to revive the long-dormant single-player and multiplayer spin-off or that style of game.

“Unfortunately, at the moment we don’t have any plans of making games like those,” Kumazawa replied via an interpreter. Not the answer I was hoping for, but the one I was expecting.

However, Kumazawa admitted that he would like a new Outbreak, and if the demand for such a game was big enough, then maybe Capcom would look at it, and maybe he would be involved in making it.

“Maybe if there are lots of user needs or there’s a need from the gamers or they want more like Outbreak, then maybe yes. I personally would like Outbreak and maybe eventually down the road I would like to make one, but at the moment, no.”

For those who weren’t around during the PS2 days, Resident Evil Outbreak (2003/04) and its sequel Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 (2004/05), offered players a glimpse into the events of Raccoon City during the time of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 from the viewpoint of eight different characters with different backstories and abilities. While it could be played solo with AI companions, it was the first Resident Evil game to have online multiplayer (up to four players). But the other gameplay hook was that all eight characters were infected with the T-virus, which would increase rapidly when bitten or slowly when pills were taken, with the goal being to finish a scenario before turning completely.

The first entry fared well critically and commercially, while the second struggled to continue the momentum, and since then the series has not been seen. But that hasn’t stopped Capcom experimenting with multiplayer Resident Evil titles, none of which have been any good. So it begs the question as to why Capcom hasn’t considered bringing Outbreak back. I’ve been vocal in the past about wanting Capcom to return to the Outbreak formula, and with online gaming as popular as it is these days, I’d love to see them try again.
