Disney Games Is Bringing Back The 1995 Gargoyles Game

1995? It was a time of darkness, it was a world of fear, it was the age of Gargoyles

The 90s were a killer time to be a kid – colours were loud, toys were dangerous and TV shows were straight up gnarly. And of these gnarly TV shows, Gargoyles was about as 90s as you could get.

A clan of heroic stone statues that turn into winged beasts at night? And they are in New York City? AND they have this Lex Luthor-esque nemesis who builds a gargoyle suit to fight them? Bro, it was sick. And so was the video game.

That’s why I am super pumped to see that Disney Games, in collaboration with developer Empty Clip Studios, has revealed Gargoyles Remastered – a ticks-all-the-boxes re-do of the 1995 side-scroller:

I call it a ‘ticks-all-the-boxes’ effort, because it is nailing every single expectation that someone should have for a modern remaster.

In short, the game offers:

  • The classic gameplay experience, graphics and all
  • Modernised graphics, with a toggle between retro and new-hotness should you wish
  • Quality of life features, such as regular saving and the ability to rewind a mistake in-game
  • Available to play on all modern platforms (even if it’s via backwards compatibility)
  • A low price point!

Chefs. Kiss. This pretty much the bar that all retro remasters should aim for – considering the subject matter alone would more than justify the release. Seriously, Gargoyles was one of those weird gems that made zero sense from a concept standpoint; but relished everything it was and more. The voice cast in particular was stellar, with the legendary Keith David lending his pipes to the main man (gargoyle) Goliath.

What a banger bit of news – I am not even mad that it’s coming out on October 19, adding to the girthy nature of that month. It’s going on my list.

Did you play the Gargoyles game back in the day? Are you excited to maybe give it a crack now? Let us know in the comments or on social media.
