Disney Lorcana Collection Starter Set — Stitch Review

Start collecting cards with Experiment 626

I have almost exclusively been on the Magic: The Gathering circuit, luxuriating in the pride of collecting more than playing. For those card game enthusiasts, the magic is often found in slotting shiny cards into a display binder. Ravensburger has circled this very specific activity for its Disney Lorcana Collection Starter Sets, and we’ve checked out the Stitch version for the current Winterspell set expansion.

Lorcana’s Collection Starter Set line of products is a look but don’t touch proposition. There are not enough cards included to make a deck or play with. Instead, this is aimed solely at those card game enthusiasts who sit on the periphery of play. Enjoyment in this set is instead found in cracking card booster packs to seek out rares, art variants, and thematic twists on your favourite Disney characters from the last century. You won’t get enough cards in a Collection Starter Set to actually play Lorcana, but you will have an attractive character folio that is mostly filled with the lovingly illustrated cards belonging to the expansion set that accompanies the Collection Starter product.

For this Stitch-flavoured Collection Starter Set, we get a modest plastic folio featuring the blue alien scamp in his rockstar era, alongside four 12-card Lorcana packs. Additionally, there is also a small booklet introducing the card elements that collectors will want to note. Most important is the dazzling, cute Stitch (Carefree Snowboarder) promo card that really tugged at my adoration for the Lilo & Stitch franchise. I was slightly surprised that the guitar-wielding Stitch on the folio cover wasn’t presented in some snowy or rugged-up scenario in honour of the frosty Winterspell cards intended to fill four-card sheets. Winterspell features just over 200 cards (not including art variants), so collectors will hopefully see close to a quarter of this set while cracking and storing the included packs. I pulled no duplicates across my packs, giving me an ample taste of the set that also looks varied on display.

Preferences for Stitch aside, let’s wrap by discussing the value proposition and quality of the Collection Set Starter. If you want to pick up this Stitch Collection Starter in Australia, you’re looking at approximately $50. The value of the Winterspell packs included is approximately $10 each. With the four packs coming in at $40, the additional $10 for the Starter Set secures the themed character folio and set-specific promo card featuring that same character. As the folio only holds 80 cards, and this set supplies just shy of 50, I would recommend this set to those curious to begin a card collection with a built-in ceiling. A further $40 of booster packs would adequately fill this folio and likely introduce the collector to a decent portion of the set. I see this line as ideal for younger collectors or collectors looking to keep a rein on their budget. This set can only accommodate the start of a collection before having to look further afield at binders, sleeves, and Disney Lorcana’s more robust set offerings. Instead, they get a nice taste of Lorcana that should hopefully have an appealing theme and character set.
