It’s been officially revealed that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will be set on our island home, Australia.
The deluge of previews that have just dropped, including the one posted to the PlayStation Blog, has provided us with a huge amount of fresh info about the upcoming Death Stranding sequel. Arguably, the single most significant revelation for us Aussies is that On the Beach will see Sam Porter Bridges make his way down under.
Drawing from the PlayStation Blog preview, we know that the game will pick up 11 months after the events of the first, with Sam and Lou taking on a job in Mexico. While the pair start south of the US, they’re soon sent far further south, landing on the shores of Australia. “In Mexico, Sam gets caught up in an incident that eventually brings him to Australia. There, he must take on the herculean task of traversing across the continent to, once again, re-connect a fractured society.”
From what we’ve learned from the previews, Sam will once again be tasked with connecting survivors to the Chiral Network, crossing a significant portion of our country as he does so. Better still, this setting choice isn’t just ceremonial, as the inhabitants of this version are still present following the fall of civilisation. According to Press Start’s hands-on coverage, “many of the characters use Australian phases”, and “Vegemite is even mentioned in the game.”
We’re already spoilt as Aussies, but there’s one more morsel to call out. Heading back to the PlayStation Blog, we hear that “The game depicts the diverse Australian nature and wildlife in vivid detail, including an animal sanctuary with lush vegetation that is home to animals like kangaroos, koalas and wallabies.” That’s right, we’re getting Aussie animals and an animal sanctuary for them to hang out in. Let me interact with a wombat and a platypus, Kojima, please.
