Len’s Island: Cursed Underworld Is The Game’s Biggest Update And It Launches In September

Len’s Island gets its biggest update yet

Brisbane developer Flow Studio has announced that the next update for its Early Access survival game Len’s Island, titled Cursed Underworld, will be available on September 10.

Cursed Underworld is the biggest update to come to the game thus far, introducing a new underground procedural cave system, weapon enchanting, armour, an overhauled skill tree, new survival mechanics, a peaceful game mode, as well as other game-changing additions.

Speaking with WellPlayed, Flow Studio founder Julian Ball says that this update is the beginning of big things for Len’s Island, with the update bringing a lot of content with it.

“Since the Early Access launch, we’ve been focusing heavily on building up all the game systems. This is our last update working on the fundamental systems behind the scenes, and we now have a solid foundation to start building the content that will take Len’s Island from a small Early Access title to a massive open-world game that’s jam-packed full of things to do.

Ball explains that while the update has a lot of new major features, the team has snuck in a bunch of smaller new features as well.

“Animals are making their first appearance in the new update with deer now spawning across the islands, opening up avenues for hunting and collecting new resources for crafting. There will be a new peaceful game mode allowing for more pacifist playthroughs of Len’s Island. We’re now completely Steam Deck compatible – we also overhauled the UI and drag-drop systems across the game to vastly improve accessibility on controllers and portable consoles. Len’s island now boasts a completely new sprawling skill tree. The entire combat system was remade and all the weapons, attacks, and abilities were reanimated and rebalanced. The list goes on…”

A lot of developers would simply add new content and balance elements that needed fine-tuning, but that’s not how Ball operates.

“Whenever I work on a Len’s Island update I can’t help but go back and attempt to make the entire game better piece by piece,” says Ball.

“It’s a terrible habit for our production workflow and my sanity, though I just can’t help myself. As I’ve matured as a game developer and the studio has grown, so have our standards, so naturally the game is constantly morphing with higher and higher standards to be met. I’m sort of addicted to making Len’s Island a better and better game. Instead of just paving new content in front of us and forgetting about the whole experience, I try to always keep the entire game in my frame of mind and improve all of it together.”

This just shows the level of care that Ball and the team at Flow Studio has for Len’s Island. Going back over the game with a fine-tooth comb to see what improvements could be made. Ball says that Cursed Underworld is more than just an update, but it’s the most apt way to describe it without it being a new game, and according to Ball, it’s going to be a good one.
