People Were Trying To Resurrect Friday the 13th: The Game, But It Has Been Killed Again

Copyright is the true killer

For a figure that cannot die, Jason Voorheese sure seems to die a lot in the video game landscape.

Friday the 13th: The Game sadly suffered a cruel fate when a licensing dispute saw the iconic Jason-sim get the boot from active sale – then it suffered ANOTHER death when all of the online matchmaking components got canned. It all stemmed from some bogus property licensing disputes between the many parents of the masked killer, and it spilled out into other Jason-centric outings.

But a modding community actually managed top shock the corpse of Friday the 13th: The Game back to life, christening their reanimated monster Friday the 13th: The Game – Resurrected.

Only never mind – the villain of the story also reanimated to send a cease and desist letter, killing the project before it could properly take off:

It is almost cartoonish with how the unliving killer of teenagers is routinely slain. The letter is downright abysmal to read, calling the project a “knock off” and vilifying the use of these establish characters for such a project. Then there are the terrifying dollar amounts mentioned as possible fines – yikes.

The developers have of course confirmed that Resurrection will not be moving forward, with their own statement echoing the sadness of many players that were keen:

It’s a shame that someone wants to fight against a fan made project with no profit made. It wasn’t our intension to ‘hurt the brand’ as Horror Inc claims we did.

We want to thank this amazing community. We’ve met a lot of cool people on the path and have had a lot of fun working on the project. We want to let you know that we did fight for you, and we still do, but for now the project is over.

And with that, perhaps now Jason can rest.

Only apparently that isn’t the case, because there is still some nebulous rumour of a new Friday the 13th game that is yet to be announced. Series composer Harry Manfredini made mention of it, but that seems to be about it.

So perhaps there will be some more slay n’ play action to come – before it is mercilessly killed off once again, no doubt.

Did you get a glimpse of Friday the 13th: The Game – Resurrected before it was dragged off into the night? Were you excited at the possibility of playing it? Let us know in the comments or on social media.
