It appears that developer PlatinumGames has acquired the trademark for their action-adventure title, The Wonderful 101, from its current owner, Nintendo.
As discovered by VGC (via Joseki100), a document transferring the property from Nintendo to PaltinumGames was submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office on August 19. I’m far from a legal mind, but the document, titled Combined Declaration of Use and/or Excusable Nonuse/Application for Renewal of Registration of a Mark under Sections 8 & 9, shows Nintendo of America Inc. as the current owner and PlatinumGames Inc. as the proposed owner, so you don’t need to be a layer to figure it out.
Originally released on the ill-fated Wii U, The Wonderful 101 is something of an oddity for Platinum, a developer best known for its over-the-top action titles. Taking a largely isometric view, The Wonderful 101 is still an action game, but the player controls a huge group of superheroes at once rather than a single character. Creative and quirky, 101 has somewhat of a cult following that eventually led to a remaster that was released on PS4, Switch and PC.
It’s likely that this acquisition will lead to something down the track, but it will probably be a while before Platinum lifts the lid on any potential sequels or remakes.
