Resident Evil Requiem Announced At Summer Game Fest For February Release

Finally an outbreak we can get behind

Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline instalment in Capcom’s 30-year strong survival horror franchise, was announced today at Geoff Keighly’s Summer Game Fest with a surprise reveal and release date to boot. The lengthy tone piece trailer closed out an otherwise fairly tame showing from the E3 replacement, following a tease earlier in the show from executive producer Jun Takeuchi, who thanked fans for their patience while Capcom cooked up the anticipated sequel.

Now officially unveiled as Resident Evil Requiem, the game is set to release next year on February 27th for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The trailer opened with an extended look at potentially playable character Grace Ashcroft, the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft from the Resident Evil: Outbreak, working as an FBI agent investigating mysterious deaths. We quickly transition to footage of Raccoon City post-bomb, looking like an apocalyptic wasteland that has seemingly become the playground of the virus and…a serial killer?

On stage, Keighly excitedly explained that Requiem represented a shift in both tone and gameplay for the series, itself something of a chameleon with its last few mainline entries shifting gameplay perspectives and aesthetics regularly.

Little else is known about the game so far but it certainly looks as if Resident Evil is pitching into a wider world, potentially giving credence to earlier leaks that claimed Resident Evil 9 would utilise Capcom’s open-world tech to make the largest game to date.
