Developer Volition has sadly announced that the studio has been shut down, effective immediately.
A statement posted to the studio’s LinkedIn account and later its website broke the news, stating that the closure comes as a result of the restructuring program at Embracer Group, the studio’s parent company. Thanks to “strategic and operational goals” being evaluated, the decision was made to close the doors at Volition immediately.
The statement ends with a heartfelt thank you to supporters of the studio over the years, reading, “We thank our customers and fans around the world for all the love and support over the years. You will always be in our hearts.”
The studio has been creating games for 30 years as of 2023, with the biggest credits being the massively popular Saints Row series and the underrated Red Faction games. The studio’s most recent release, the rebooted Saints Row, reportedly underdelivered commercially and was met with a lukewarm critical reception (we gave the game a 5), but the team had put a lot of effort into fixing many of the complaints thrown at the game.
Oddly enough, Saints Row happens to be one of the games included in this month’s PlayStation Plus Essential update, which feels a bit sombre now, all things considered.
