At the PC Gaming show, developer Variable State announced its sci-fi first-person horror shooter Deepest Fear for Steam.
Combining an immersive sim experience with a Metroidvania design, Deepest Fear looks to showcase an interesting take on the genre. But the most jaw-dropping feature is the dynamic enemies manifesting from the water flooding the decaying deep-sea facility you find yourself stuck in.
Although Deepest Fear doesn’t have a release date currently, fans of the genre have much to look forward to. The upcoming game will feature creative problem-solving in both the immersive sim genre and Metroidvania style, all while a real-time fluid simulation allows enemies to materialise from any water source or submerged space. This creates an unsettling dynamic with water in the game as you traverse through submerged environments that change at a moment’s notice within the labyrinth that is the retro-futuristic Neptune facility. Luckily, players will have an arsenal of tools at their disposal to aid in their survival.
There will be high stakes for survival as you explore and complete environmental puzzles, but when it comes to the story, Deepest Fear has one to tell. Players will be put into the shoes of Dr. Danni Carroll and thrown into the confines of the Neptune facility, which happens to be hiding dark secrets. Unfortunately, you’ll be far away from rescue, but you will discover the mysteries surrounding a project that happens to be masterminded by Danni’s estranged father.
Those worried about the soundtrack are in for a treat. BAFTA-winning composer and studio co-director Lyndon Holland will provide an original cinematic score in Deepest Fear. The award-winning writing talent behind Virginia and Last Stop is also featured. Fans who enjoyed The Abyss and The Thing will be happy to know that Deepest Fear has been inspired by these iconic films, among others.
