Naughty Dog has announced that the long-awaited Last of Us multiplayer game has been cancelled.
The news came from a blog post on the Naughty Dog website, claiming that the overly ambitious project forced the studio to choose between supporting a live service product or continuing to develop the single-player experiences that the team is known for. The statement claims that, once in full production, the project scope became apparent.
“To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post-launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games,” the statement reads. “So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage.”

Things have been looking dire for The Last of Us Online, with several contracted workers attached to the project being laid off as recently as October. This followed a report that an internal review from Bungie had exposed numerous flaws and shortcomings with the title, leading many to expect the game to be released far into the future or, as has come to fruition, never at all.
