2022 hasn’t exactly started off how we intended, but perhaps time itself has simply been holding its breath for the true beginning of the year: February. We live in a timeline where AAA sequels to two highly regarded games and a brand new IP from a studio who can basically do no wrong can release and exist within 28 days of one another; it’s so good it should be illegal. Shut the curtains, turn off the news, and retreat to your doomsday bunker if you’ve got one. February has cometh, and it’s taking no prisoners.

As we shift into overdrive here at the WellPlayed summer of gaming, I’m trading my jorts in for some Manscaped underwear to support my sweaty, chafing Elden Ring in the weeks ahead. But there’s a LOT to look forward to before dredging through FromSoft’s poison pits on Feb 25. First up is the long-awaited sequel to the parkour, zombie-bopping extravaganza in Dying Light 2: Stay Human on Feb 4. After a long, self-imposed Omicron lockdown, maybe I will attempt to socialise with some fellow denim-dependent introverts by way of multiplayer action-RPG escapes Lost Ark and Destiny 2: The Witch Queen. Who are we kidding though? This month really belongs to one game. Horizon: Forbidden West has some big boy jorts to fill and I couldn’t be more excited for Feb 18. But we know y’all really here for my JRPG takes, so hang tight for the new title from ex-Persona talent in Monark on Feb 22.

The last time I was this excited for a video game released in February was (checks notes) 2017. What a wonderful time that was, when Xbox Game Pass was but a twinkle in Phil’s eye, the Switch was an unknown entity and Sony had just launched Horizon: Zero Dawn. Five years is a long time in video games, but one thing remains, Aloy is still a badass character and I can hardly wait to be reunited with her in Horizon: Forbidden West. Riding dinosaurs and fighting giant robot beasts is exactly what I want in a video game, yet finding the time will be hampered by a ton of other titles that have my attention. From the Witch Queen’s arrival in Destiny 2, to the skateboarding heaven of OlliOlli World and Sifu’s Bruce Lee-infused action, it’s going to be a February to remember for all the right reasons.

January has come and gone and boy do we have a lot to look forward to in February. First up is a game I feel like I heard about five years ago, then nothing, and now it’s here. I’m of course talking about Dying Light 2, where the day is a safe haven, then night falls and all hell breaks loose. An extra bonus for me is that it releases on my birthday. Destiny has been teasing us with the Witch Queen for some time now and she is finally here! The Sister of Shapes, the sword-breaker, Savathûn has arrived. The Witch Queen DLC is arriving in Destiny 2 on February 22. Horizon: Zero Dawn was a surprise game for me when I first played it, I wasn’t expecting it to be so engaging, and now the wait is finally over for its sequel Forbidden West. It looks absolutely stunning and who could look past Miss Carrie-Anne Moss having a role. Now I’m not much of a Souls-like player but the co-op elements of Elden Ring have piqued my interest and I look forward to having my first attempt at this sort of game. Rumbleverse surprisingly has me excited as well. My gun skills aren’t amazing so hopefully I might be able to do a little better in this brawler royale. All things considered, February is looking mighty fine.

February is usually when people abandon their New Year’s resolutions and admit that they set the bar a bit too high, but not me. No, I plan on getting my steps in and achieving my weight loss goals. Sure, there’s the threat of a parkour zombie taking a chunk out of my back, but that’s why they say that pain is gain. Righto, so I’ll likely be sat inside in front of the fan again this month, but the free-running and undead death-dealing that I’ll be doing in Dying Light 2: Stay Human should meet my fitness quota. A double dose of hand-to-hand combat will also be keeping me busy for the coming 28 days, with the kung-fu fineness of Sifu and the decidedly less serious goofiness of Rumbleverse providing enough punches and kicks to make Bruce Lee blush. And, of course, I won’t be able to make it to March without dipping into FromSoftware’s newest punishment. I’m not a jewellery man, but Elden Ring will be the exception to the rule.
