October 28 – Bayonetta 3 (Switch)

Some say October is a time to break out the Ouija board, pledge yourself as a knight in Satan’s service, and drink blood directly from the fountain that has mysteriously appeared in your backyard. Others say no one has ever said that. Some say it is the time to pen bizarre poetry about what games you’re excited for in the spookiest month of the year. I say it’s time to reflect on what it means to fight things as a buxom witch using colossal demons you summon made of your own hair, the same hair that also clothes you. Yes, Spooktober has something for everyone this year, but you’ll never have time to play all of its offerings, which is perhaps the scariest thing of all…

Let me be honest for a second. Am I excited for Overwatch 2? Yes. Am I incredibly nervous that it’s going to be a mess of changes and microtransactions? Absolutely. But in many ways, I’m glad we’re finally here, despite the uncertainty that surrounds a sequel that still needs to prove why it’s a sequel. The drama surrounding this series put an unhealthy strain on both fans and its eSports league, but maybe there’s some light at the end of the tunnel. Also, there’s a ghost fox now. At the very least, I can happily sit down with A Plague Tale: Requiem and Mario & Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and be guaranteed a good time, but the jury is still out on Blizzard. As it is with Call of Duty, a franchise I fell out of love for many years ago, but the recent beta and Destiny 2 strike vibes some of the content previews have teased have given slight hope that Modern Warfare 5 …sorry, Modern Warfare 2 might be worth playing after all.

Greeting ghosts, goblins and ghouls, the spooky season is officially upon us. Screw Christmas, get out of here Easter, Halloween is my holiday of choice. I tend to celebrate the month of the macabre with at least one or two horror games releasing around October, and this year will come close to following that trend. Rather than playing a new horror game, this year’s quota will be met revisiting Resident Evil Village in the form of the Winters’ DLC. Playing through the game again from a tasty new third-person perspective will be the goods, but the Rose Winters story content is what has me fidgeting in my jorts. Pivoting into the less serious side of spooky, I’ll be throwing on a Proton Pack and being cautious not to cross my streams with Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. Do I need to play another asymmetric multiplayer game based on an 80s property? No. Will I jump into without a second thought? Yes. Lego Bricktales and New Tales From the Borderlands will tempt me without a doubt, but I refuse to let my better judgement guide me away from the real contender. The parallels between it and Marvel’s Avengers are cause for concern and the gameplay shown off doesn’t inspire the same excitement as other outings involving the Caped Crusader, but I’m under the spell of Gotham Knights nonetheless. Keen or cold, The Long Halloween is coming, so mark your Calendar, Man.

Honestly, if you thought Elden Ring was a shoo-in for GOTY, just wait until October finishes, because A Plague Tale: Requiem could be more than just a threat. Asobo Studio’s sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence is easily my most anticipated game of the year, and from everything we’ve seen it’s shaping up to be an excellent time. I’m very curious to see how the increased focus on combat plays out and impacts the narrative. The game looks darker and grittier, and I couldn’t be more excited to kick the Inquisition’s arse with Amicia. Other games that are giving my jorts a run for their money are Scorn, NHL 23, Resident Evil Re:Verse (let’s see how long this one lasts) and the Resident Evil Village Shadows of Rose DLC.

Who allowed a Nintendo exclusive to be my most anticipated title of the month for two months in a row? From wrecking Rabbids to destroying demons, Team Red has my jorts in all sorts of trouble this month. But we will have to get the other titles out of the way first. The biggest non-Nintendo related release is by far A Plague Tale: Requiem. I adored Asobo’s rendition of Sydney with the original ga- wait it’s NOT Sydney? Could have fooled me. Regardless of where in ‘not Sydney’ we go, Amicia and Hugo de Rune will be the host of what will undoubtedly be one of the most riveting stories told in 2022.

Next up, we’ll go with all the PC ports for October, because the month is full of them. First up, I’ll finally have the chance to play Persona 5 Royal as it hits PC, being able to play it on a more flexible platform would make the notion of having to replay a 100-hour JRPG that much more approachable. Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection and The Last of Us Part I hit PC too. I may be an overall detractor of a lot of Naughty Dog’s works, but you will never hear me denying their technical prowess as a development studio. I’m also keen to finally check out Triangle Strategy once it hits PC this month.

Going back to JRPGs for five minutes, Star Ocean: The Divine Force has me all sorts of interested. The previous game, Integrity and Faithlessness, was rather disappointing, but something about this latest title just has me interested.

Now the two heavy hitters for the old jorts this month, hailing exclusively on Nintendo’s hybrid console, the Switch. I have been patiently but eagerly awaiting Bayonetta 3. The hack and slash series is fantastic, oozing with style, and made me question whether i wanted to be shot by the titular character or have her step on me, maybe both. Bayonetta 3 looks to be just what I need, and hopefully Platinum Games’ work in this game can allow me to forget about Babylon’s Fall. Going from overtly sexual to surprisngly tactical, I find myself immensely excited for the release of Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. If you read my preview, you would know that my hands-on time with the game immediately saw it skyrocket to my most anticipated title of October. I love turn-based tactics games, I love the Super Mario Galaxy games, and I love having an excuse to use my Nintendo Switch. Give it to me already, I need to help Princess Rosalina!
