Ubisoft has confirmed that its popular Far Cry series will have a bigger focus on multiplayer moving forward.
When asked about the future of the open world action series at the recent Saudi Arabia’s New Global Sport Conference, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told the crowd that the goal for Far Cry is to “really to bring the multiplayer aspects more predominantly pushed, so that it can also be played for a long time by players.” Reading between the lines, it seems like Ubisoft isn’t done with experimenting in the live service space, and Far Cry may be the next sacrificial lamb placed on the altar.
However, it’s not confirmed whether this means that the next mainline game – Far Cry 7 – will have a bigger emphasis on co-op multiplayer or if there’s a multiplayer title in the works. Rumours were circulating in 2023 that a standalone multiplayer extraction shooter project set in the Alaskan wilderness was in development.
As someone who enjoys the Far Cry games, I’m not against a multiplayer spinoff – I’m not sure Far Cry is a series that needs that treatment though. I just hope that it doesn’t come at the expense of the single-player-focused experiences with standout villains that we’ve gotten in the past. For me, that is when Far Cry is at its best.
